Overview

Boldly styled on the outside, the X2 shares its underpinnings with the already excellent X1. A 228-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four mates to an eight-speed automatic transmission with front- or all-wheel drive. The fun-to-drive X2 went from 0–60 in 6.4 seconds in our testing. Connectivity options include a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot and Apple CarPlay. Available safety tech includes lane-departure warning, automatic high-beams, forward-collision warning, and low-speed automated emergency braking.

The X2 seats five. Front-seat passengers will find a comfortable space, and drivers can see well in all directions, though rearward visibility is limited when people are in the back seats. The rear seats are short on legroom, but they're supportive.

This BMW provides a quiet interior that uses plenty of premium materials. However, there are some spots where you'll find hard plastics instead of top-notch finishes.

X2 Cargo Space

The BMW X2 has OK cargo space for a luxury compact SUV. With more than 21 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, you have enough room for the family golden retriever or a weekend's worth of luggage. Fold the rear seats down, and you get about 50 cubic feet of space, letting you haul some larger items, such as outdoor gear.

X2 Infotainment, Bluetooth, and Navigation

Standard features in the X2 include automatic climate control, a seven-speaker audio system, a USB port, Bluetooth, and the iDrive infotainment system with a 6.5-inch screen. Available features include a panoramic sunroof, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Apple CarPlay, wireless phone charging, a 12-speaker Harman Kardon audio system, satellite radio, and an upgraded infotainment system with an 8.8-inch touch screen and navigation.
The infotainment system is user-friendly once you get past the initial learning curve. The available touch screen lets you avoid the touchpad controller for many functions, making it a worthwhile upgrade. The X2 offers Apple CarPlay but not Android Auto.

X2 Engine: Generally Solid

The all-new X2 features a 228-horsepower turbo-four engine. It's responsive and provides plenty of power for most driving situations. It feels a little leisurely off the line, but you'll have no trouble passing cars on the highway.

X2 Gas Mileage: Pretty Good

With ratings of 23 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, the X2 gets better gas mileage than some rivals, but there's not a lot of difference between the most and least fuel-efficient luxury subcompact SUVs. You'll spend about the same amount on gas money driving the X2 as you would classmates like the BMW X1and Mercedes-Benz GLA.

X2 Ride and Handling: Nothing to Complain About

BMW has a reputation for delivering fun-to-drive vehicles, and while the X2 may not totally live up to that billing, it still provides plenty to like. It rides smoothly and handles with composure, and from behind the wheel, it feels like you're driving a car not an SUV.
